Bioenergy & Heating

Burning wood for heat and power, from a cooking fire to a converted coal station.

Why it matters to materials

Two completely different industries share this heading. One is household fuelwood and charcoal, largely informal and local, and it is the bigger of the two. The other is the internationally traded pellet business, which exists because European and Asian renewable energy rules count biomass - a market created by policy and therefore removable by policy.

Scale. About half of all wood harvested worldwide is burned rather than built with, which makes this the largest use of wood by volume and the least visible in commodity markets.
