Carajás

The highest-grade large iron-ore operation in the world.

What this place is

Carajás sits inside protected Amazon forest reached by a 890 km railway. Its ore is clean enough that steelmakers pay extra for it because it cuts their own emissions.

Grade. Around 65-67% Fe as mined, above the 62% benchmark, so it earns a quality premium.
A banded iron formation
enriched hematite ore unenriched banded iron formation: iron oxide alternating with chert weathering leaches the silica out surface
Over two billion years ago, oxygen produced by early life met iron dissolved in the oceans and precipitated it. The result is millimetre-scale bands of iron oxide and chert laid down over hundreds of millions of years. Later weathering leached the silica out of parts of it, leaving almost pure iron ore. Schematic. Enriched zones can be tens of metres thick and hundreds of metres long. Original diagram, The Materials Atlas.
“Grade” is the percentage of the useful stuff in the rock. A copper mine at 0.5% grade throws away 199 tonnes of rock for every tonne of copper it sells. That single number decides whether an orebody is a mine or just an interesting piece of geology.

What comes out

A “by-product” is a metal recovered because it happens to be in the same rock, not because anyone went looking for it. Its supply therefore follows the primary metal’s economics, not its own.
