What this place is
Kamoa-Kakula is the counter-example to falling copper grades: a genuinely rich sediment-hosted deposit found in this century, in a country better known for cobalt.
Grade. Ore grades several times the global average for a large copper mine, which is why it was built underground rather than as a pit.
“Grade” is the percentage of the useful stuff in the rock. A copper mine at 0.5% grade throws away 199 tonnes of rock for every tonne of copper it sells. That single number decides whether an orebody is a mine or just an interesting piece of geology.
