What is it?

A fast-grown, dense, strong southern US pine - the workhorse of American framing and the only major species that takes preservative treatment right through.

Why does it matter?

It is the most planted timber species group in the United States and the reason the US South is the largest softwood-producing region in the world. Its permeable sapwood is why pressure-treated decking and ground-contact timber is nearly always southern pine.

Where it grows

The US South, from east Texas to Virginia, overwhelmingly on planted land rather than natural forest.

What it is used for

Framing lumber, pressure-treated decking and ground contact, plywood, OSB, poles and pallets.

What to watch

Strong and stiff for a softwood, but it moves a lot as it dries and the wide growth rings of fast plantation wood are weaker than slow-grown stock of the same species.
