What is it?
Structural timber built up from smaller pieces into beams, columns and whole floor slabs big enough to replace steel and concrete in a mid-rise building.
Why does it matter?
Mass timber is the only route by which wood competes for buildings above about five storeys, and it is the reason sawmills in several countries are investing in grading and finger-jointing rather than more saw capacity. It is also the newest series FAO publishes, so the country coverage is thin and the numbers move sharply year to year.
