Praseodymium

What is it?

Neodymium's near-twin, so alike that magnet makers usually do not bother separating the two and sell them together as didymium.

Why does it matter?

Pr substitutes directly for Nd in magnet alloy, which effectively enlarges the magnet-metal pool. It also colours welding goggles and glass yellow-green.

Deeper written sections for this material have not been published yet. Everything below is drawn straight from the source datasets and is complete.

Read the numbers correctly. Reported as praseodymium oxide (Pr6O11) equivalent. Usually traded as NdPr oxide or NdPr metal, a mixed product.

A rare kind of magma made mostly of carbonate rather than silicate rises as a near-vertical pipe from deep in the mantle. It carries rare earths, niobium and phosphate with it. Where the top of the pipe has been weathered, the ore is already concentrated before anyone touches it. Schematic. Pipes are typically 1–5 km across at surface and continue for kilometres down. These are the minerals that actually carry praseodymium. A deposit is only an orebody if one of them is concentrated enough to pay for digging it up.

How much of it a technology needs

“Intensity” just means how much material one unit of something contains. These are indicative ranges — real designs vary by maker and model year, and every one of them is falling as engineers learn to use less.
