What is it?
Sawdust and shavings dried and squeezed into uniform cylinders that can be handled, shipped and burned like a liquid fuel.
Why does it matter?
Pellets turned mill residue into an internationally traded energy commodity, and policy created the market: European and Asian renewable-energy rules are why North American and Baltic sawdust now crosses oceans. The demand is political in a way that lumber demand is not.

Read the numbers correctly.
Metric tonnes. Pellets are traded on energy content as well as weight, and moisture is the variable that matters - a wet tonne carries less energy and more freight cost per joule.
Graded by diameter, durability, ash and chloride content. Industrial pellets for power stations and premium pellets for domestic stoves are separate markets with separate prices.
