Why it matters to materials

The EV is the single largest new source of demand for lithium, cobalt, graphite and rare-earth magnets, and a large new source of demand for copper and nickel. It is also why a mine permitted in 2026 is being justified by a car that will be sold in 2033.

Scale. An electric car uses roughly two to three times as much copper as a petrol car, and adds materials no combustion car needs at all.
