Panels are how the industry uses the trees a sawmill cannot: small, crooked, fast-grown or already sawn into offcuts. They turned the residual half of every log from a disposal problem into a product line, and they compete directly with solid lumber in sheathing, flooring and furniture.

Cubic metres of panel, which is a volume of finished product and not comparable with the roundwood volume consumed to make it. Panel yield per cubic metre of log is far higher than sawnwood yield.
Traded by thickness, size and bond class. The bond matters more than the wood: the same particle board is interior-only or exterior-rated depending on the adhesive.
